Desperate times: Reddit considers adding ID verification to fight flood of AI bots

Reddit is currently grappling with a significant issue regarding the proliferation of AI bots on its platform. In a bid to tackle this growing concern, the company is contemplating the implementation of ID verification, a strategy that has gained traction in the tech industry.

During an appearance on the tech show TBPN, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman elaborated on the challenges posed by AI and the potential solutions being considered. He emphasized the necessity of determining whether a genuine human is engaging with the platform at any given moment.

“Reddit is for humans,” stated Huffman, who went on to discuss various verification methods the company is exploring. He posed the question, “Is there actually a human using Reddit right now?” echoing the sentiments many platforms share about user authenticity.

Huffman suggested that the most straightforward method might involve technologies akin to Face ID or Touch ID, which fall under the broader category known as passkeys. He noted, “Every platform wants to know ‘is this a person?’ Now Reddit's version is ‘is this a person but we don't want to know which person this is.’” This distinction is particularly vital for Reddit, a platform that has traditionally celebrated user anonymity.

While discussing potential verification methods, Huffman acknowledged that there are more extensive ID verification processes, such as “ID checking services,” which the company already complies with where mandated by government regulations. However, it appears that Reddit is hesitant to broadly adopt such rigorous measures as a universal solution to its bot dilemma.

Alexis Ohanian, a co-founder of Reddit who departed from the company’s board in 2020, expressed his support for addressing the bot issue but cautioned against the potential backlash from users. He remarked, “RDDT requiring Face ID was not something I had on my bingo card but something has got to be done about all the fake/botted content — I just don't know how to sell face-scanning to redditors or even lurkers.”

In his interview with TBPN, Huffman also highlighted his endorsement of constructive uses for AI on Reddit, including functionalities like auto-translation bots. Nevertheless, he stressed the importance of ensuring that a legitimate human is behind any AI bot operating on the site.

Reddit has long faced challenges with automated accounts and content farms that manipulate the upvote system. However, the emergence of AI has led to an influx of bots attempting to imitate real users, often flooding the platform with spam responses to genuine user posts and comments. This issue has been exacerbated since 2024 when Google significantly boosted Reddit's visibility in search engine results, attracting spammers who exploit the platform as an SEO tactic.

As Reddit contemplates its next steps, it remains to be seen which method of ID verification will be selected. Regardless of the choice, it is likely to encounter resistance from the platform's vocal and privacy-conscious user base.

In summary, Reddit's exploration of ID verification highlights the ongoing struggle to balance user privacy with the need for authenticity in an era increasingly dominated by AI-driven content generation. The outcome of these considerations could have profound implications not only for Reddit but also for the broader social media landscape.
