Amazon has made a significant announcement by introducing Alexa+, a new generative AI assistant, at a live event in New York on February 26, 2025. This innovative assistant is positioned as an upgrade to the familiar Alexa devices, boasting enhanced conversational abilities, smarter responses, and a more personalized user experience.
Alexa+ is powered by a large language model (LLM) and incorporates what Amazon refers to as ‘agentic capabilities.’ The company has developed a concept known as ‘experts,’ which comprises various systems, APIs, and instructions specifically designed to accomplish particular tasks efficiently.
According to Amazon, the latest evolution of generative AI is embodied in Alexa+, which promises to be the most conversational and personalized AI assistant to date. The new architecture connects LLMs, agentic functionalities, and third-party services, creating a more cohesive interaction for users.
Through the use of these ‘experts,’ Alexa+ is capable of performing a wide array of functions, including controlling smart home devices, making reservations or appointments, exploring music discographies, ordering groceries, and notifying users when tickets for events become available.
Panos Panay, the Senior Vice President of Devices & Services at Amazon, stated, “With 600 million Alexa devices now out in the world, the latest advancements in generative AI have unlocked new possibilities—enabling us to reimagine the experience in our pursuit of making customers’ lives better and easier every day.” This statement reflects the company's commitment to enhancing user experience through technological advancements.
The updated assistant is designed to understand and respond to more nuanced communication, picking up on half-formed thoughts and colloquial expressions. This improvement aims to create a smoother and more natural interaction between users and their AI assistant.
How to Access Amazon’s New Alexa+
With a substantial number of households already equipped with the original Alexa devices, accessing Alexa+ will be convenient for many users. The new assistant will be available through a dedicated mobile app and a browser-based interface, making it accessible from various devices.
The rollout of Alexa+ is set to begin in the United States over the next few weeks, starting with an early access period. Following this initial release, Amazon plans to expand availability in waves over the coming months. Users of Echo Show 8, 10, 15, or 21 devices will be given priority during this early access period.
While the company has not provided specific details regarding the global availability of Alexa+, interested users can sign up to receive notifications for free early access as it becomes available.
In terms of pricing, Alexa+ will be included as a new benefit for Amazon Prime members, making it free for subscribers. For those who are not Prime members, the service will be available for a monthly fee of $19.99.
The introduction of Alexa+ signifies Amazon's ongoing effort to innovate in the AI space, enhancing the functionality and user experience of its devices. With advancements in generative AI, Amazon aims to redefine how users interact with technology in their daily lives.
